U.S. President Donald Trump phoned Russia’s Vladimir Putin on Tuesday to congratulate him on his re-election. Special attention on their phone call was devoted to working through the question of a possible high-level meeting.

According to the Kremlin statement, “The leaders spoke in favor of developing practical cooperation in different spheres, including on questions of how to ensure strategic stability and fight international terrorism. Both Presidents agreed to work together to avoid a possible arms race.”

Trump says will meet with Putin 'in the not too distant future'

The White House will issue a statement later on Tuesday, a U.S. administration official said.
