What we celebrate on May 1st?

Today is a celebration day, May 1st, and we celebrate the blooming of spring, an ancient European spring festival originated in the Roman era where people use to pay tribute to the Roman goddess of flowers.

Walking in time we stop for a little in European culture where May 1st was considered as the first day of summer, while the Midsummer was and is still celebrated on June 21st.

However, May 1st throughout the centuries has been traditionally a day of festivities, mostly associated with the celebration of springtime fertility.

Since the 19th century in some parts of the United State traditions calls to make May Baskets, small baskets filled with flowers or treats and left at someone's doorstep. The giver rings the bell and runs away.

The communist revolutions of northern Europe have given political colours of this festive day calling it as the ‘International Workers' Day,’ also known as a ‘Labour Day’.

By the end of the 19th century, the organization of socialist and communist political parties in Chicago decided to commemorate the labourers and the working class on May 1st.

May 1st, for more than 50 years is one of the most important holidays in communist countries such as the People's Republic of China, North Korea, Cuba and the former Soviet Union countries. May Day celebrations in these countries typically feature elaborate workforce parades, including displays of military hardware and soldiers.

However, in the United States, Labour Day is celebrated on the first Monday of September.
